Is it an emergency? What to do right now

Safety first

• If you smell gas: leave the house right away. Don't flip light switches, use the phone inside, or start appliances. Once you're outside, call your gas utility and 911. 
• If a carbon monoxide alarm goes off: get everyone, including pets, outside into fresh air and call 911. Don't go back in until responders say it's safe.
  
  

If there's no safety concern, these quick checks can sometimes get the heat back on while you wait for us:

• Thermostat: make sure it's set to Heat and a few degrees above room temperature. If the screen is blank, replace the batteries. Why Is My Thermostat Blank?
• Power: check that the furnace switch (it often looks like a light switch near the unit) is on, and that the breaker hasn't tripped.
• Filter: a badly clogged filter can make the furnace overheat and shut itself off. If it's gray and caked with dust, replace it.
• Front panel: most furnaces won't run unless the door panel is fully closed. A safety switch behind the panel stops the system if it's loose.

Still no heat? Stop there and call us. Repeatedly resetting a furnace that keeps shutting down can hide a problem that needs a technician.

 

Common furnace problems we fix

Furnace won't turn on

The cause can be anything from a failed ignitor or control board to a blown fuse, a tripped safety switch or a thermostat that has stopped talking to the system. We test each part instead of guessing, so you pay for the repair you need.

Furnace is blowing cold air

Cold air from the vents usually points to an ignition problem, a dirty flame sensor, an overheating system that shut its burners off, or a thermostat fan setting. 

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Furnace turns on and off too often (short cycling)

A furnace that starts and stops every few minutes wears out faster and leaves rooms uneven. Common causes include a clogged filter, an overheating heat exchanger, a dirty flame sensor, a poorly placed thermostat or a furnace that's too big for the house.

Loud or unusual noises

Banging when the burners light, squealing from the blower, or rattling inside the cabinet are signs to call us before a small repair turns into a big one.

Burning or musty smells

A light burning-dust smell the first few times the heat runs each fall is common. A strong burning, electrical or rotten-egg smell isn't. A musty smell often traces back to the filter, ducts or moisture.

Ignitor, flame sensor or pilot problems

Modern furnaces light with a hot-surface ignitor and use a flame sensor to confirm the burners are lit. Older furnaces use a standing pilot. When any of these fail, the furnace may try to start and then shut down. These are routine repairs for our technicians.

Some rooms are warm, others are cold

Uneven heat can come from airflow problems, duct issues, a struggling blower or a system that isn't matched to the house.

Furnace tune-ups and maintenance

A fall tune-up is the simplest way to avoid a no-heat call on the coldest night of the year. It also helps your furnace run safely and efficiently, and catches worn parts before they fail.

What a Geiler furnace tune-up includes:

• Inspect and clean the burners, ignitor and flame sensor
• Check the heat exchanger for cracks or corrosion
• Test safety controls and limit switches
• Check venting and draft
• Inspect the blower motor and wheel; check electrical connections
• Check the filter and airflow
• Test thermostat operation and a full heating cycle

Furnace installation and replacement

How a furnace is installed matters as much as which furnace you buy. Proper sizing, airflow, venting and setup determine how well it heats and how long it lasts. Our union technicians install the system alongside apprentices who are learning the trade the right way.

Repair or replace your furnace?

Sometimes a repair is the right call. Sometimes it's money spent on a system near the end of its life. We'll give you a straight answer, based on:

• Age: many furnaces last roughly 10 - 15 years. Past that, breakdowns and efficiency losses add up.
• Repair history: if you're calling for repairs every winter, replacing the furnace may cost less over time.
• Cost of the repair: we compare a major repair against the value left in the system.
• Safety findings: a cracked heat exchanger or a venting problem can make replacement the safe choice.
• Comfort and bills: uneven rooms, noise and rising gas or electric bills are signs your system no longer fits your home.
