What Contaminants Impact Your Indoor Air Quality?

There's a wide variety of ways your air quality can be affected, including your home's ventilation and the items or people in your home, but what are the other contaminants that often affect Indoor Air Quality?

Indoor Air Quality

Radon

Radon is the #1 cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers. It's an odorless, colorless gas that forms in the ground and can seep into your home through cracks in the foundation. The danger of radon increases when there are high levels in your air. The only way to know if radon is affecting your air quality is to test for it.

Particulate Matter

Particulate matter, or PM2.5, references a range of contaminants and particulates, including dust, dirt, and liquids that can become suspended in the air. This often includes wildfire smoke, smog, and soot. The smaller the particulate matter, the more harmful they become.

Humidity

Humidity is the amount of water vapor currently in the air and has a large impact on Indoor Air Quality. Maintaining balanced humidity levels is imperative to improving your home's air quality so you don't have mold, dry skin, asthma, allergies, viruses, and more lingering in your air.

Volatile Organic Compounds

Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are a group of chemicals that can vaporize into your air and are found in household products like paint, air fresheners, cleaning products, candles, and more. VOCs can cause both serious short-term and long-term health effects depending on the amount of your exposure and are detrimental to your Indoor Air Quality.

Indoor Air Quality

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, toxic gas that can cause serious health problems and even death, depending on the concentration and length of exposure. Average levels of CO vary from 0.5 to 5 parts per million in homes with electric stoves and can be anywhere from 5 to 15 parts per million in homes with properly adjusted gas stoves.

Carbon Dioxide

Most people know carbon dioxide (CO2) as a natural greenhouse gas that is harmless in small quantities. However, when CO2 levels become concentrated indoors with little to no ventilation, you may notice lower productivity, restlessness, increased heart rate, blood pressure, headaches, and more.

Mold

There are several different types of mold, and while they are very important to our ecosystems, mold buildup in your home will lead to both health issues and property damage if left unchecked. Mold in your air can lead to allergic reactions, sneezing, red eyes, and more serious health issues, as well as, warped floors, damaged furniture, and more.

Allergens

Anyone who suffers from allergies throughout the year knows just how badly they can make you feel. Many allergens like pollen, ragweed, grass, pet hair, and more can linger in your home’s air and cause sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, and other allergic reactions, as well as trigger asthma symptoms that can be dangerous to your overall health.
