Federal Energy Tax Credits
Definition: A credit against tax owed. Tax credits are subtracted from the tax owed, unlike tax deductions, which are subtracted from taxable income. Tax credits allow the government to encourage certain consumer behaviors.
Tax credit applicable:30% of cost up to $1,500.00 for replacement of existing systems.
The following credits expire December 31, 2010
Air Source Heat Pumps: HSPF 8.5 or more, EER 12.5 or more, SEER 15 or more
Central Air Conditioning: SEER 16 or greater, EER 13 or greater
Boiler: 90% efficiency or greater
Furnace: 95% efficiency or greater
Oil: 90% efficiency or greater
Gas Water Heater 90% efficiency or greater
Electric Water Heater energy factor 2.0 or greater
Geothermal Heating Systems tax credit 30% of cost with no upper limit
The following credit expire December 31, 2016
Geothermal Closed Loop System: EER 14.1 or greater, COP 3.3 or greater
Geothermal Open Loop System: EER 16.2 or greater, COP 3.6 or greater
Direct Expansion System: EER 15 or greater, COP 3.5 or greater

dKentucky , Indiana and Ohio Appliance Rebate Programs
Each state has allocated a portion of federal dollars toward their programs. The individual state incentives are in addition to any Federal tax credit or utility rebates that may apply. Programs start in the spring of 2010 and will continue until the funding for each state has been allocated. These incentives are not only for high efficiency heating and cooling systems but energy efficient water heaters as well.
